Autumn/Winter skin

Updated: Sep 20, 2023

I’m sure most of you have noticed overtime that our skin changes throughout the course of the year, as we go in and out of new seasons.

During the summer, our skin often feels a little 'glowier' (small pigmentation changes, adequate moisture levels etc) then September hits and it feels like it all goes to pot - breakouts, dry, tired looking skin. So why is that?

Our skin consists of 3 primary layers; epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous tissue. The epidermis is the outermost layer (referred to as the skin barrier) - it’s the layer that gives our skin its texture, lipid regulation and moisture levels (amongst other things). When the air outside is cold, there is less moisture present and the skin needs this moisture in order to perform as we need it to. Alongside the lack of atmospheric moisture, the moisture present in our epidermis evaporates quicker - leaving thirsty skin that cannot retain hydration like it could in warmer months. This in turn leads to a reduction in lipid production which will again leave our skin feeling dry (known as Xeroxis) and possibly irritated.

When our bodies get cold, we hit the thermostat and whack our central heating on. This causes further reduction in atmospheric moisture - going in and out from the cold to artificially heated houses- causes havoc with our skins ability to control its hydration and oil production.

The wind and the rain is the triple threat- the physical nature of these weather elements continue to batter our already weakened epidermis (skin barrier). And what do we all love to do after a day in the cold/wind/rain- spend ages in a hot shower or bath trying to warm up…. the nail in the coffin for our poor skin.

The signs of a weakened skin barrier; flaking skin, dry patches, cracking skin, itching, stinging, redness (erythema), a raw sensitive feeling. The most effective way to tackle autumn/winter skin is to make small tweaks early in the season to protect our faces from all the elements- as we know, prevention is better than cure. This might involve using a slightly heavier/thicker moisturiser or adding in a hyaluronic acid serum before applying your daily moisturiser. On the note of hyaluronic acid serums- these should always be applied before a moisturiser or emollient. Hyaluronic acid attracts water and if moisture levels are low in the atmosphere then it will take moisture from your skin-leaving you feeling dryer. So always lock the serum in with another form of hydrator (your moisturiser). Then as ever, always end with your SPF even in those winter months.

If you find yourself already in the realms of dry, sore skin- this indicates a weakened skin barrier and at this point you need to strip your routine right back (remove retinols, acids etc) and focus on repairing that barrier with specialised skin barrier recovery creams, mild hydrating cleansers (oil based are great) and the use of gentle facial oils too. If you suffer from redness Autumn/Winter time- consider a ‘calming’ serum designed for red/rosacea prone skin. TOP TIP- apply the majority of these products at night time- (not the SPF!) - as they can leave the skin a little greasy/shiny/sticky which can be a problem during the daytime.

Don’t forget to look after those lips too- they are so often neglected!

Autumn is the perfect time to consider improving your overall skin health with in-clinic treatments such as injectable skin boosters - giving you that ultimate boost of hyaluronic acid from the inside out. Not only are they great hydrators, but also stimulate your own natural collagen productions- giving you firmer, tighter skin. Skin boosters are a progressive /marathon' type treatment- results take a little longer to see compared to toxin & dermal fillers- so starting them now will ensure you get maximum benefit when the weather really changes.
